A Software Ecosystem for Research, Zettelkasten Note-Taking, and Writing [UNDER DEVELOPMENT]

Zotero

Zotero is a citation management software. This page of the guide concerns how to create links between Obsidian and Zotero files and collections.

See here for a library guide about Zotero and one about its use in relation to the Zettelkasten system (see separate page of present guide):

Note-taking within Zotero

To make good use of Zotero when using Obsidian to produce manuscripts, it is important to learn the mechanics of note-taking and annotation using Zotero.

Zotero is a powerful way to create in-text annotations, which then can be aggregated and incorporated into "literature notes" in the Zettelkasten system or for that matter any note-taking system. (See the material about literature notes in the Obsidian page of this guide.) Copy and paste your notes into whatever template you create within Obsidian for literature notes. For one approach to creating a template for literature notes, see the discussion in the Obsidian page of this guide.

Here are some library guides about note-taking in Zotero:

[PUT IN DETAILS] Once you compile the annotations or selections of texts you made within Zotero, you can export them in markdown, which is what Obsidian uses. Copy the export into an Obsidian note, which then enables you to link back to the text of the document within Zotero. That note can become a full-fledged "literature note" after you edit or add to it.

This in effect provides a powerful way of getting Zotero to "talk" to Obsidian and vice versa.

Obsidian and Zotero Linking: Using Plug-Ins

This guide  focuses on manual ways to create linkages between Obsidian and Zotero.

The guide currently does not address available plug-ins for getting Obsidian and Zotero to talk.

Obsidian provides caveats about security problems here that can arise when using plug-ins. Contact the help desk with questions about the security issues involved with plug-ins.

If you are interested in exploring Obsidian plug-ins, check the community plugins identified from within Obsidian and hunt around on Youtube for ideas about how to use relevant Obsidian plugins.
