Free online tool to create charts and graphs
Google Sheets
Free with Gmail account. Creates graphs in a manner similar to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (data goes into the sheet and can be selected to make a graph)
Meta-Chart
Free online tool to create charts and graphs. This one has a wider range of the types of graphs you can create, including Venn diagrams and tally charts
Plotvar
Free, online. Slightly more complicated to use, but can even create animated line graphs. Works best when you use the URL it generates for the graph, rather than exporting it as an image
Raw Graphs
Another free web-based tool for data visualizations. Supports nearly 30 types of visualizations. Includes a number of example data sets or you can import your own. Exports in multiple formats, including as an SVG vector graphic for easy scaling/editing.
Tableau
Tableau Academic - free license available for for students. Powerful Desktop software for creating data visualizations. Can create a web-based interactive visualization or export to a static image.

Mapping and Timelines

Timeline JS - Easy to use platform for creating interactive timelines. Includes step by step instructions on creating a timeline using a Google sheet to store your data.

Google Maps - My Maps - Google-powered tool for creating simple maps.
