DMP Writing Resources

Many grant funding agencies require Data Management Plans ("DMPs") as part of the grant application process. The processing of writing a DMP helps you think about the data life cycle as it applies to your project. (See "Other Data Related Resources" for information about the data life cycle.)

Below are some resources for writing a DMP.

In your data management plan you may want to mention a repository in which you will deposit your data; for this, see the Data Repositories page in this guide.

A common question is whether grant applications will be rejected because of a DMP. To see one discussion, go the STS-L archive, and look for the thread of messages with the subject header "Grant rejections due to DMP", starting on 11/03/2015. (Scroll down on this link.)

RESOURCES FOR WRITING A DATA MANAGEMENT PLAN:

DMPTool
This tool assists in drafting data management plans that fulfill the specific requirements of a number of federal agencies and major foundations. Click login and select Lehigh University to get started. You can save plans for customization on a project-by-project basis. This tool is made available by the University of California Curation Center of the California Digital Library. (Note: for NIH data requirements, the Genomic Data sharing components are still being worked on by the NIH DMPTTool Working Group as of 12/15/2022.)

ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research) is the world's largest archive of computer-readable social science data. Go to the library database list for access. As a member institution, Lehigh faculty and students have direct and free access to download data. The data resources include but are not limited to surveys of values, attitudes, health, race and religion, political exit polls and voting behavior, data on crime, and consumer income.
