Definition
Standards are documents that serve to formalize procedures, rules, or guidelines for industry to follow. They are often created by professional societies and industrial organizations, then adopted by industries and governments. They can take years of committee work to produce, so that (a) they are infrequently updated and (b) can be expensive to obtain, since the sale of the standard supports the committee work.
