History of Electromagnetism

History of Electromagnetism

"It is of great advantage to the student of any subject to read the original memoirs on that subject, for science  is always most completely assimilated when it is in the nascent state, ...."   Maxwell, A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism.

This guide links to resources relating to the history of electromagnetism (EM) from the early 17th century through the end of the 19th century, including resources about specific figures as well as resources about the general history and philosophy of EM.

It especially focuses on two approaches for organizing one's understanding of the history of EM.

For discussions about the importance of history (and philosophy) of science in learning and teaching science, see the last page of this guide. This library guide reflects the views in the latter guide.
