Article Databases

The library has a large number of databases about a wide variety of subjects.. Below are just a few of the databases that you can use. Talk to the science librarian for further ideas.

Also, the library has many subject library guides. For example, there are subject guides for earth sciences, biology, and chemistry. These may give you ideas about further databases to search for articles and information.

ALSO: see the box in this guide under the tab "Finding Background Info"; the box is titled "Popular Periodicals as Background Information Source and Pointers to Academic Studies".

Interlibrary Loan

Use Interlibrary Loan to request a PDF of an article that isn't available at Lehigh or a scanned PDF of a print article that Lehigh owns. You will get an email when the article is ready for download.

Have citation, find article!

If you have a citation, how can you locate the article?

You can use the Citation Linker to see if Lehigh has access to a specific article or journal.

Also, you can use the library catalog to look up the journal title, then see if we have the specific article electronically or in print.

Review Articles

"Review articles" can play an important role  as course reading assignments--or for students to use when they are doing research papers or projects. Such articles give a bird's eye view of the latest developments in a field or niche within a field. They can contain valuable bibliography. Look for the ability to restrict to review articles in the databases you use; for example, Web of Science allows this.

The titles of these articles often have a more generic quality than the titles of  articles reporting very specific research findings. For example, compare these titles:

  • Physiological responses of coastal and oceanic diatoms to diurnal fluctuations in seawater carbonate chemistry under two CO2 concentrations
  • History of Seawater Carbonate Chemistry, Atmospheric CO2, and Ocean Acidification

One source (among others!) of review articles is the following database, which is dedicated to this type of article.  Tip:  sort the search results in descending date order so you see the most recent articles for your topic.)
